Mr. Right and the Haunted House
The four-foot Christmas tree standing on the side table near the window should have eased the gloom in the room, but it didn’t. Instead, the battery-operated blinking lights increased the wild shadows on the heavy brocade drapes and intensified the stark stone of the wall behind, and its false cheer made anything beyond its light, including me, seem more forlorn and dead.

He was different from the others—so different that she wasn’t the only one to spot it. Still, all that regard wasn’t good for him. The boy was far too serious for so young an age.

Dragon Fire
Declan Black beat his wings against the night sky, as a barrage of gunshots screamed from below.
“Faster, Tallon!” He shouted to the female dragon in front of him, seconds before bullets tattered the scales of his left wing. A hot spike of pain lanced between his shoulder blades. Slipping in his ascent, he paused to grab a breath.

Across Time
Near Bath, England
Isabel Church had finally come home. After years of dreaming, of clipping pictures of castles and people dressed in tweed from magazines, she’d arrived. She’d never been to England, yet the rolling green hills and misty weather seemed as familiar to her as the cows and farmlands back in the Midwest where she’d grown up.

Kindred Spirit
The bar was sweltering and the dancing sweaty. Especially since I was squeezed between two hotties and my best friend, Jenna, as we danced like wild monkeys.

The Seal and the Sea Nymph
Lieutenant Byron Burke cupped his hat over his heart and knelt before a cluster of simple headstones. Resting a well-muscled arm on his knee, he bowed his tawny head in prayer for the only family he’d ever known. “I’d be nothing if not for you,” he rasped. "Nothing."

Anubian Dreams
Mnen’atet sat in her room, overlooking the river and the dhow that sailed there. The sunrise had caught the woven sails, turning them gold, and she contemplated the happiness of this color compared to the dread the sunset of the night before had brought with its blood-red hue and aspect of ill-omen.

“You look like you could use a drink.”
My head popped up from where it had been examining my feet. The stereotype goes that every female is obsessed with shoes, particularly ones with high heels. Here’s the secret: I’m not. In fact, I’m rather the opposite.

Arianna Penndragon
Arianna stood on the battlements of the ancient fortress. For miles around the land stretched out before her. The rolling fields were green and sprinkled with beautiful wildflowers. Just now she wanted nothing more than to go down there and pick some of those flowers to take with her to her drab, little cell of a chamber, but she knew that was impossible. The torch in her hand threw a warm glow on her dark hair and pale skin. Auburn blazed where the light fell and the full moon made her skin almost shimmer. It would be one of those mornings that she remembered all too well from her childhood, when the moon hung high for many hours after the sun had risen and the dew dripped from the flower petals leaving everything fresh and clean.

The Avalon Patrol
The big bay careened down the road, hooves pounding the soft dirt, sending clods flying. Crouched over his mount’s sweating neck, the man dug his heels into the barrel sides of the horse, let the reins out through his gloved hands, and gave the horse its head.

Gypsy Charm
Andalusia, Spain 1776
The red scarf hid her long hair but itched her scalp. The worn and dusty hat on top of the scarf helped hide her features and the kohl liner created the false shade of whiskers along her jaw. Still, Neena de Leon kept to the shadows of the stack of wine casks, able to at least listen rather than watch the match about to ensue.

Jack hadn't thought much about death, something he realized when, without warning, it found him. Oh, he'd always expected to experience "beyond the sunset" or to "cross that river" or any of the other numerous descriptions of entering Heaven.

Elle's Beast
Giselle hurried by the paper boy on the corner, his voice high and urgent in the waning light of day.
“Jack the Ripper strikes again!” He waved the paper in mid-air as he paced the corner. “Scotland Yard baffled! Read all about it!”

Dark Encounter
Addy glanced up at the rumble of thunder, her steps slowing to a jog. Summer time in Alabama was a pressure cooker of high temperatures and humidity that left its inhabitants stewing in their own juices until a thunderstorm came along and blew the lid off the boiler, offering a welcome, if temporary, respite from the heat. Today the weather had been unusually mild, especially for July. There was a light breeze and the thermometer had barely registered ninety-six; practically balmy. Even the humidity had been tolerable. Some days it was like trying to breathe underwater.
