Taming the Rogue
4th April 1758, Richmond Park, London

The gold and pink striped dawn rippled across the narrow blade slashing through the air in fine precision. The wrist turned sharply into a Cart, feinting into a Ters then back into a Cart.

Thrust. Parr. Lunge. The sword flowed with the ease and grace of a true master.

"I suppose, old man, there isn’t a way to make you see reason and bow out?" Denton, the Marquis of Huntley, casually queried of his rapier-wielding friend.

Spanish Eyes
New York City, 1879

A furry brown rat took slow steps toward Rebecca Wakefield in the alleyway. She held her breath and placed a trembling hand over her mouth as she remained flat against the wall of the building. If that blasted creature came any closer, she didn’t know what she’d do.

Suddenly
Richmond House, the London residence of the Duke and Duchess of Richmond, was modest in comparison to some of the more opulent townhomes of the ton. On the evening of the Duchess of Richmond’s annual ball to open the season, its appearance was anything but modest.

Five sons. Five heirs. Five coffins.

Klaus’ memories of his children’s funerals haunted him each time a new life came into the world. He stared out the window as he pealed off a glove. Klaus could barely see the tips of the Semmering Alps. Imagined ghosts danced on the summit, dragging undulating veils of gossamer fog behind them. The image made his hand tremble. Klaus covered his nerves by wringing the glove. His knuckles turned as white as the fabric. Across his chest, the flag of his fatherland armored him in a constricting embrace. One would wonder if the red of that fraternal sash was stained from his weeping heart and the white a brutal reminder of innocence lost.

In My Father's Name
A week passed before Elijah decided to see Abigail Roberts. It had been a frustrating time for him as deputy of a small backwater town along the Canadian River, as well as, for the sheriff, Chris Lawry, not able to find anyone to refute the testimony stating Frank Jacobs, a small-time rancher, had drawn first against Gideon Harper’s foreman or the cattle found on Jacob’s land had been rustled. Not a single townsfolk had come forward, even though everyone knew it for what it was – lies. Chris had tried to settle Elijah down over the whole affair and had threatened to lock him up if he caught wind of Elijah going anywhere near Harper’s ranch. If it weren’t for the fact he might soon be a father, Elijah wouldn’t have hesitated to get the truth out of Gideon Harper.

In Sarah's Shadow
She screamed, oh how she screamed. Her lungs ached with the frigid air and yet she continued, hoping against hope that someone would hear her. Icy snowflakes clung to her lashes making sight difficult. Her hands felt stiff and numb and her head pounded with each shuffled step she took. She stumbled through yet another massive drift and wondered if there was any point in continuing this trek. It would be so easy to lie down on this soft bed of snow and close her eyes.

Imperial Guard
St. Petersburg, Russia
March, 1765

No time for farewells. No explanations. Lady Karina Gregorevicha Dobrova scurried down the Winter Palace hallway, cradling the newborn to her breast. Cold air brushed her face, a startling contrast to the warmth of the birthing chamber. She slipped into her room, her pulse pounding, her thoughts racing.

Belle Isle
Rosemary MacBride shifted on the train’s mohair seat, perspiration trickling inside her corset. So hot, for early October. She pulled a handkerchief from her leather Gladstone bag, patted her face and checked the view. No orange groves. Only the same scrawny pines visible since south Georgia.

The smoke from the battlefield stung Tullia Aria’s throat, dear Juno it made her eyes weep and her lungs burn. Death surrounded her. Cry upon heart- wrenching cry echoed through the dank night. But she couldn’t help the soldiers. No, she dare not stop, dare not make a sound, or the Celts would catch her.

Deadly Courtship
Every muscle throbbed with each step, feeling as though they were being ripped from his bones. Perhaps they were, since there was only tattered flesh to protect them. His feet were in much the same condition, having run bare across the rough English terrain. Heavy breathing broke through the silence of the night, his lungs struggling to take in air after having been used so violently. His upper body was bare, but coated in a thin layer of dried blood, his thighs were encased in a coarse woolen fabric that he had been forced to grow accustomed to; nothing like the fine linens he had worn his entire life. His black hair was plastered to his head with sweat, worn longer than he would have liked; so long, that the locks curled about his ears and around his neck.

Mrs Hawthorne sighed, her graceless, bejeweled fingers tapping the arms of the gold and gilt settee. “Well, at least you’re here,” she sniffed. “Had you drowned the inconvenience to us would have been far greater.”

Highland Love
A cool breeze kissed Abigail’s cheeks as she stood in the dark room and overlooked the lush green lawns of her father’s estate. Memories of having run across them, her older brother and younger sister on her heels, flashed through her mind’s eye. Such memories contrasted sharply with how she currently felt. Her arms were wrapped about her waist and she felt sick to her stomach.
