Molly's Story How a sensible woman learned about love, lust, and things that go bump in the night- Finalist!
Molly was standing before a rattling window gazing out at the fierce storm that battered her little house. She was cold and wrapped her arms around herself; All she was wearing was a silk robe that did nothing to protect her from the artic draft that snaked it’s way through the cracks in the ancient windows frame. Being a sensible woman she wondered why in the heck was she wearing the silly robe and standing next to a leaky window. It was not the kind of thing Molly would have done and this fine silk kimono wasn’t at all the sort of garment one could find in her wardrobe. If she was going to be standing around looking out the window in the middle of the night, she had a fleece robe that was snugly warm and covered her sleep sweats in a very practical way. Molly was a very practical woman and proud of it. And just when did any of the windows become unstable? Molly kept the house in very good repair.

Strings Attached- Finalist!
“Shit!” George screamed racing over to the tap with her bloodied finger.
She’d cut it slicing up chillies. Sliced pepper, sliced finger and now the spicy contents of the Mexican plant felt like it was burrowing to her core. This was typical. She was under pressure, she was rushing to get things finished and her mind was on another job. Sometimes multitasking was just plain dangerous.

The Billionaire’s Marriage Ultimatum- Finalist!
The silence in the boardroom was deafening. Not that she minded being there, Rachel
Kane told herself, her eyes taking in the dark surroundings. It had been a long time since she’d actually attended a presentation like this and she felt nervous just being there. Her insides had been on the fidget since they’d arrived and now renewed their churning. She had even bought herself a new suit for the occasion, charcoal black and just the right style to accentuate her small waist, with a white shirt and black platform heels to complete the look. Her hair had been cut and styled for the first time in years and now her thick black hair felt wonderful as they brushed against her neck and back whenever she moved her head.

Desires of the Soul- Finalist!
Immersed in the heavy shadows of Chicago’s South Side, Dom crossed the roof of the office building, leaving behind the incinerated remnants of his latest kill. Darkness cloaked his large frame as he stepped onto the narrow ledge high above the street and eased onto his haunches like a gargoyle in the night. Motionless, he observed his surroundings and catalogued every detail while pushing out his preternatural senses through the streets and alleys of the city, passing over the humans, to seek out the monsters he hunted.

Winning the Widow's Heart- 2nd
A piercing scream from inside the homestead split the frigid air. Jack Elder flattened his back against the rough-hewn logs, his Smith and Wesson drawn. Icy fear twisted in his gut. He couldn’t think about the woman inside, couldn’t let himself imagine what had ripped that tortured sound from her. He needed his thoughts clear.

Blood Loyalty- 3rd
The damn wiper blade had broken again--on the driver’s side, naturally. Zanna squinted and tried to peer through the rain-blurred windshield, muttering curses. The downpour on the Festiva’s roof sounded like a tinny, meth-fueled drum solo. She should have headed back from the nursing home before the storm hit, but it was the first Saturday she’d had off since she’d gotten the job six weeks ago. Aunt Millie had been so happy to see her that it was worth the hour-long drive. Unfortunately it was already after midnight. And now, with the rain, she wouldn’t get home until two a.m., if she was lucky--and she had to cover Carolyn’s six a.m. shift, as well as her own third-shift slot tomorrow night. And Mr. Padilla had fits if she punched in any later than 10 minutes till.

Mr. Darcy's Undoing, A Modern Tale of Pride and Prejudice- Honorable Mentions
Chapter One
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman teetering on the verge of thirty is in want of a husband. Miss Elizabeth Bennet, age twenty nine years and three hundred sixty four days, was a notable exception to this rule. Pressure from her mother notwithstanding, Elizabeth was quite content with her single status. More so in recent weeks, perhaps, than ever before. There was something about capturing the unwanted attention of a very powerful, very married man who couldn’t take no for an answer that made her appreciate the unconditional love of her dog in an entirely new way.

When the Earth Moves- Finalist!
It was a hot night, as hot nights went in LA, the cool kiss of evening found only in the teasing tendrils of an indolent breeze. It was quiet, for such a large city, although most sane souls were safely abed in these drowsy, somnambulant hours just before dawn. Overhead, muted stars flickered lazily through a thick haze. They glowed, impotent and faint, but the moon was full. There was light enough to see.

Companion Wanted- Grand Prize Winner
“I should just give up. It’s never going to fit.”
Lexie Marshall surveyed the piles of clothing and camping gear spread out on her bed with a critical eye. She’d been mentally packing for this trip for months, but in her head this stuff hadn’t taken up nearly so much room.
James glanced up from where he was slumped against the wall texting his wife and pretending to pay attention to his sister. “It fit when we went to Vermont.”
He had a point. Somehow, she’d managed to stow all of this on her bike trailer when the two of them had done a tour of Vermont last summer—back before James had quit riding with her to spend more time with Amber, the woman he’d since up and married. Lexie liked her new sister-in-law, but she missed being on the road with James. The TransAm wasn’t going to be the same without him.
