The oldest child of a military family, I traveled a lot as a kid, never going to the same school more than one or two years. Over the years I become an ardent student of human nature; grew to love ancient history and myth. Along the way, I acquired a fascination for the ridiculous and unusual. Certainly, even now, I collect way too much useless information. Fortunately, that comes in handy when cooking up plots for a novel.
In high school I took every writing class I could. I wrote stories of civil war battles where the woman languished for the return of her man. There was one about a pregnant teenager and the mother who stood by her. Another about the birth of a baby and the father who paced anxiously on the porch. In yet another, the moon stood guard over a pirate ship. I wrote poetry in the grandest dramatic tradition. I don't remember thinking...someday I'll grow up to be a writer. That didn't come until much later, after my first publication - a little known article for Listen Magazine titled, Jessie's Choice.
These days, I write, write, write whenever I can. In between I work as a Registered Nurse, read, garden, take black-and-white photos and travel. Race walking is my favorite activity, and baseball is definitely the best spectator sport I know. One of these days - okay, after we finish the remodel on the house - I plan to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.
